Chapter 3 - Evidence- Notes
Intro
- Evidence is any statement that is a response to: "Why is this true?"
Finding Evidence
- Arguments are combinations of claim and evidence for it
- Look out for phrases such as:
- because
- as a result
- in the first place
- in the second place
- for example
- in addition
- given that
- studies show
- for the following reasons
Numbers and credibility
- Numbers are often associated with science, which is generally believed as the key to understanding the truth about our world
- People say it started in 1900s with lots of advancements with numbers and then other science stuff
Sufficiency & Representativeness
- When evidence is not sufficient or perhaps has unrepresentative evidence to support a claim, we say author is guilty of the fallacy of hasty generalization
Authority
- For example, when a sports player shows up on a tv for car insurance, that's out of their expertise and this is known as the fallacy of false appeal to authority
- Another fallacy related to the source of the evidence is the fallacy of argumentum ad populum, loosely translated to "appeal to the people"
- Just because many people accept a belief is not in itself evidence that the belief is correct
- This is also commonly known as the bandwagon effect
Clarity of expression
- Numbers don't speak for themselves, they must be explained and clearly elaborated on to why they're used
- Graphs and charts can create this problem
Evidence-based management
- Evidence-based management refers to management that is different from the current style that is based off gut-feel, obsolete traditions, mimicking, etc.
- Referred to as HIPPO - the Highest Paid Person's Opinion
- Info should come from four sources:
- Expert and experienced practitioners such as skilled business professionals, consultants, executives
- Scientific research literature - these are often peer-reviewed and contain meta-analyses
- The manager's organization itself
- Internal and external stakeholders such as employees, members, customers, suppliers, government, etc.
